Script writing
The best script is no script
With a great script, the viewer or listener should forget there's a script. They should be far more interested in what's being said, how it makes them feel and who's saying it. So you can get on with the business of putting your message across.
Ha ha, hmm, ah... or all three?
I've worked with lots of independent production companies on a wide variety of projects. From making a current script funnier to expressing complex brand properties as easy-to-understand customer benefits. So whether you need funny (ha ha), convincing (hmm), clear (ah) or all three, I'm here to help.
Here's some of my work
Online
This online video was written for CLIPPS.TV, a production company working in the hospitality area, to promote a four-star hotel in Boston, USA, targeting both business and high-end leisure customers.
"Alex understood our business and delivered excellent copy for our online presence in no time - and he was fun to work with. We hope we'll be working with him again very soon!" Jurgen Biefing, MD, CLIPPS.TV
Radio
A 30 second radio ad commissioned by marketing agency hey moscow, for the Learning and Skills Council. The ad was for the new London-wide e-Prospectus and aimed to drive young people to the website. During the campaign the site received over 130,000 unique hits.
“I believe you will find him creative, diligent, supportive, fun to work with and a valuable member of your team.” Liz Wakefield, MD, hey moscow
Mobile
'Gonnabe!' was the first interactive mobile cartoon sitcom. It was written for Seven Ideas productions, commissioned by '3' mobile. Viewers were invited to text in (with a photo of themselves), suggesting how the characters might seek fame. The winner's idea was written into the next episode, with a character based on their photo.
“Alex is a great guy to work with. He is a great writer. What I liked most is that he was prepared to take a risk. Brilliant! Highly recommended.” Ian Thompson, Director, Seven Ideas Productions
Televison
This sketch was written for and produced by BBC2.
Stand-up comedy
What has stand-up comedy got to do with writing in the real world? Good question. The answer is 'everything'. From finding new ways to address well-known issues, to developing ideas through audience feedback, and honing truly conceptual thinking. Humour is an incredibly powerful tool for engaging all sorts of audiences, disarming them of preconceptions and breaking through competitor noise.
Perhaps the hardest, least forgiving format, developing stand-up comedy scripts is a real challenge; it's something I did successfully for four years.
Theatre
Working with Dastardly Productions I wrote the script for Famished, a darkly comic Victorian musical. The play sold out at the Edinburgh fringe festival and an extended version will be showing in London in 2012.
"Alex is a funny man and a highly professional writer. His characterisation, plot development and dialogue are all exceptional. His attention to detail is fundamental to his approach. He played a crucial part in making Famished really special. And hilarious. I can't recommend him highly enough." Jake Morely, Creative Director, Dastardly Productions
Praise for Famished:
"The script is so sharp it could cut a squirrel in half, and the comic timing brave but brilliant. It's surreal and absurd, but incredibly funny." ★★★★★ BROADWAY BABY
"Raucous, rumbling and raunchy, Famished is pure, unadulterated fun from start to finish." ★★★★★ THREEWEEKS
